With the announcement of the royal engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton, the sapphire and diamond ring is making a bit of a comeback. At DePrisco Jewelers in Wellesley, sapphire engagement rings are coming back into vogue."In the early 80's, Diana got the famous Lady Diana ring, and that became extremely popular for years," said Albert Deprisco. "Everyone wanted it. Now with with a new engagement of royalty, we've had many, many requests," he said.Sales of sapphire and diamond rings are up at E.B. Horn in Boston, too."I would say we sell probably several a week, not necessarily on the scale of the Kate ring," said owner Richard Finn.Kate's ring is an approximately 8-carat sapphire, surrounded by 14 diamonds. It's valued at hundreds of thousand of dollars. But if that's too pricey, there's the "Baby Diana." It can be custom-made with just about any size stone, from a 1-carat sapphire to 15 carats."Quality doesn't have to reflect size," said Finn. "You can find quality in a smaller size just as easily," he said. The Diana-Kate ring is so desirable, there are now websites offering replicas for as little as $19.90.Simulated sapphire and cubic zirconium rings are popping up all over the place. But jewelers say you get what you pay for. The same qualities you'd look for in another stone hold true for genuine sapphires."With diamonds, you're looking for the colorless or the finest white. In the sapphire, you're looking for the most beautiful blue," said DePrisco. While sales may not be as brisk as when Diana got her ring, the sapphire and diamond piece is definitely stylish again."It's a design that's been around for a long, long time, and it will never go away because it's beautiful and it's classical," said DePrisco.
