| Reputed mob boss, jewelry thieves allegedly teamed up Posted: 05 Oct 2010 08:45 AM PDT The reputed mob boss of the Cicero street crew allegedly provided protection for a prolific gang of thieves who targeted jewelry stores and homes of the wealthy and persuaded one of their victims not to pursue a complaint, according to new documents released in a court case targeting the men. Reputed mob boss Michael "Big Mike" Sarno is accused of getting a piece of the proceeds from the crew of thieves who were overseen by alleged motorcycle gang leader Mark Polchan, who ran Goldberg Jewelers in Cicero. Polchan allegedly spotted targets, coordinated and financed the jobs, and then fenced the stolen goods and split up the proceeds. The fresh details come in recently filed court records as the federal criminal case case against Sarno, Polchan and three others proceeds to trial later this month. Crew members allegedly stole more than $1.8 million in valuables. Polchan is accused of breaking into the currency exchange next to his store by going through the crawl space under his building and breaking through the floor next door. Polchan's attorney had no comment, while Sarno's attorney did not return a message.
