Fresh violence takes 11 lives in Iraq

An Iraqi soldier stands guard near a goldsmith's shop in Baghdad after an attack by gunmen on October 17, 2010.

Eleven people have died in explosions and shootings across Iraq where more than 231 people have been killed by homemade explosive devices so far this year.

The deadliest incident occurred on Sunday in western Baghdad when a large gang of gunmen stormed a number of jewelry stores in al-Yarmuk neighborhood, Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

Three soldiers, two jewelers and two gunmen lost their lives in the attack, security sources said.

In a separate incident, two civilians were killed as two improvised explosive devices (IED) attached to their vehicles went off in the capital's western neighborhood of al-Mansour.

A soldier was also killed and an officer wounded when an IED detonated near their patrol vehicle in a village west of Mosul, the capital of the northern province of Nineveh.

A bomb blast also hit a civilian car in the al-Bayyaa area in southwestern Baghdad, killing the vehicle's owner on the spot.

Meanwhile, four policemen and two civilians were separately wounded in a bomb blast in southern Mosul and a mortal shell explosion in the city's west.

Iraq's Monitor of Constitutional Freedom and Bill of Rights revealed on Sunday that 231 were killed and 601 others wounded in explosion of IEDs across Iraq in 2010.
