A Fort Myers jewelry designer says he keeps his business booming by making a difference in the community.

Mark Loren, owner of Mark Loren Designs, calls it cause-based marketing.

"There are not a lot of retail jewelers that are doing it with a vision in mind," Loren said. "They sort of reach around for what they can find to give."

Mark Loren Designs, which is celebrating its 25th year in business, specializes in loose colored gems such as tourmaline and sapphire. Loren says he's always searching for new gems and other specialty items he can add to his inventory.

He recently snagged the first strands of souffle pearls, a hollow green and bronze iridescent, to hit the Southwest Florida jewelry market from China. Loren also partnered with award-winning local chocolatier Norman Love Confections to create an exclusive engagement chocolate box including a one-carat diamond retailing at $10,000.

"While some places like to tout themselves as the place to find the diamond," Loren said, "we like to say we're the place to find the proposal."

The exclusive chocolate box was one of many promotions Loren has featured for the past six months to celebrate the anniversary.

Loren said giving back to the community and educating his customer has helped him garner lasting partnerships and build a repeat client base.

"It's all about people coming in and the experience they have rather than what we can sell them," Loren said. "The smarter our clients are about the product that we have here, the wiser the purchase is and the happier everyone is."

Tina Diaz, a repeat client of Loren's and former Fort Myers resident, has bought his jewelry for more than 15 years and continues to even though she has relocated to Tampa.

"They have made several jewelry pieces for family members and friends when we have requested them," Diaz said, "doing a great job of putting together our thoughts and ideas in even better form to produce a treasured piece of jewelry."

Loren, who formerly owned galleries in Naples and North Carolina, has partnered with local companies such as Edison National Bank on non-profit charities. Bank President Robbie Roepstorff has worked with Loren at fundraisers for the American Heart Association and most recently in April with the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools' Golden Apple awards banquet in Fort Myers.
